Breadstick Linux License

Effective October 24, 2026

In short: Breadstick Linux has two parts, licensed differently.

1. What this page covers

This page explains how the software that makes up Breadstick Linux is licensed. It covers Breadstick Linux only. Breadstick's other apps are covered by the Terms of Service. Where this page and an open-source license that comes with a component disagree about that component, the component's own license wins.

2. The open-source Breadstick Linux platform

Most of the core Breadstick Linux platform is open-source software. Each component is licensed under the GNU General Public License, the GNU Affero General Public License or another open-source license, as stated in the license file that comes with it. You may use, study, change and share these components under the terms of their licenses. Nothing on this page, in the Terms of Service or in the Breadstick app takes away any right those licenses give you.

Breadstick's open-source components

ComponentWhat it doesLicenseSource
Display serverDraws your Linux apps as Android windowsGPL version 3 github.com/Breadstick-io/xserver
Linux system imageBuilds the Debian system Breadstick downloads at first startGPL version 3 github.com/Breadstick-io/rootfs

The license that applies to a particular release is the one in the license file shipped with that release.

Software from other projects

The platform is built on the work of many open-source projects, and each keeps its own license and copyright. The Linux system is Debian GNU/Linux, whose packages are licensed by their authors as Debian records in each package. Breadstick also uses PRoot (GPL version 2), virglrenderer and libepoxy (MIT), noVNC (Mozilla Public License 2.0), and fonts under the SIL Open Font License and other font licenses. Software you install yourself inside Linux comes from its own repositories under its own licenses.

3. The proprietary parts

These parts of Breadstick Linux are closed-source commercial software:

Their own code, design, text and graphics are copyright 漏 2026 Breadstick Linux. All rights reserved. They are not licensed under the GPL, the AGPL or any other open-source license, and their source code is not published.

You get a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to install and use them, with Breadstick Linux, under the Terms of Service and Google Play's terms. Breadstick Pro, bought through Google Play, extends that license to the Pro features for the Google account that bought it. Except as the law allows or as section 4 explains, you may not:

4. Open-source parts inside them

The proprietary parts include some open-source components, such as the display server, PRoot and virglrenderer. Those components stay under their own open-source licenses, and section 3 does not restrict anything their licenses allow. You can get their license notices and corresponding source code from github.com/Breadstick-io or by writing to hello@breadstick.io. The open-source licenses of those components apply to those components; they do not make the rest of Breadstick open source.

5. Getting the source code

Source code for Breadstick's open-source components is published at github.com/Breadstick-io. If a component's source is not there yet, or you need the exact source of a particular version we distributed, email hello@breadstick.io and we will provide it, as its license requires, for at least as long as that license requires.

6. Names and logos

The open-source licenses cover code, not names. "Breadstick", "Breadstick Linux" and the Breadstick logo are Breadstick's trademarks and are not licensed under any open-source license. If you publish a changed version of an open-source component, give it a different name and do not suggest that Breadstick made or endorses it. Debian is a trademark of Software in the Public Interest, Inc., and Android and Google Play are trademarks of Google LLC; Breadstick is not affiliated with or endorsed by either.

7. No warranty

The open-source components come with no warranty, as their licenses say. The Breadstick app is provided "as is", as set out in section 6 of the Terms of Service.

8. Changes

We may update this page; the effective date above changes when we do. A change never takes back rights an open-source license already gave you for software you received under it.
