progress in Breadstick

Breadstick runs Debian's own progress package for ARM64, the build a Debian 13 computer with an ARM processor installs, so progress should behave as it does on a Linux PC. It is a command line program rather than an app with a window of its own: you run it by typing its command in Breadstick's Terminal, or in any terminal window on the Linux desktop, and it needs no Desktop or Floating session running.

Commands in the package

  • progress

Type it in Breadstick's Terminal to start the program.

Workflow tools run inside the Terminal as on any Linux system. There is no systemd, so nothing starts in the background on its own: a job runs while something you started keeps it going. More in the docs: What Breadstick cannot do: the system itself.

About progress

From Debian's package description

This tool can be described as a Tiny, Dirty, Linux-and-OSX-Only C command that looks for coreutils basic commands (cp, mv, dd, tar, gzip/gunzip, cat, etc.) currently running on your system and displays the percentage of copied data. It can also show estimated time and throughput, and provide a "top-like" mode (monitoring).

It simply scans `/proc` for interesting commands, and then looks at directories `fd` and `fdinfo` to find opened files and seek positions, and reports status for the largest file.

It's very light, and compatible with virtually any command. This program was formerly known as 'cv' on github.
