Linux terminal and developer tools for Android and Samsung DeX

The 230 command line programs and interactive terminal apps in the catalog, from language runtimes and compilers to version control, servers and databases. Each page lists the commands its package provides.

Terminal programs in Breadstick

Breadstick's Terminal is a plain Debian shell on your phone or tablet, in the same Linux system the desktop apps use, and these programs run there, or in any terminal window on the Linux desktop, with no Desktop or Floating session needed. There is no systemd, so servers and databases do not start on their own: you start them by hand, and Android does not give apps the network ports below 1024. More in the docs: The Terminal.

Languages and runtimes

23 programs. In Linux development tools.

Interpreters and runtimes run on the device's own ARM64 processor, from Debian's own packages. Keep projects in your Linux home folder, which is much faster than Android's shared folders for trees of many small files. Libraries with compiled parts need an ARM64 Linux build, or the tools to build one on the device.

Build tools and compilers

21 programs. In Linux development tools.

Compilers and build tools make ARM64 Linux programs on the device itself, with Debian's own toolchain. A big build uses the device's processor and memory, so it takes longer than on a desktop PC, and each parallel job is another process, which counts against the limit Android puts on apps.

Debuggers and profilers

3 programs. In Linux development tools.

Debuggers and profilers were tested on a phone: they debug, trace and profile the programs they start. Attaching to a program that is already running reaches only one started from the same Terminal tab, because Breadstick's Linux system runs every program under proot, which already traces it.

System monitors

1 program. In Linux system tools.

A system monitor here sees only the processes of Breadstick's own Linux system, because Android does not let one app see the processes of others. Android also keeps the whole device's counters from apps: on the phone we tested, Android 17 refused /proc/stat, /proc/loadavg, /proc/uptime, /proc/vmstat and /proc/net/dev, while /proc/meminfo and /proc/cpuinfo stayed readable. Monitors that stop without those counters are left out of this catalog, and the one listed leaves those panels empty.

Web, file and network servers

11 programs. In Linux internet apps.

There is no systemd in Breadstick, so a server does not start on its own: you start it by hand from the Terminal. Android does not give apps the network ports below 1024, so a web or file server listens on a higher port, and other devices on your network can reach it at the device's address when it listens on all addresses and Breadstick is running.
