Limits in Breadstick

smbd cannot use port 445, which Android does not give apps, so set a port above 1024 in its config (smb ports). Windows expects SMB on port 445, so it does not find such a share on its own.

Samba in Breadstick

Breadstick runs Debian's own samba package for ARM64, the build a Debian 13 computer with an ARM processor installs, so Samba should behave as it does on a Linux PC. It is a command line program rather than an app with a window of its own: you run it by typing its command in Breadstick's Terminal, or in any terminal window on the Linux desktop, and it needs no Desktop or Floating session running.

Commands in the package

  • smbd
  • smbstatus
  • pdbedit
  • dumpmscat
  • eventlogadm
  • mvxattr
  • nmbd
  • oLschema2ldif
  • profiles
  • sharesec

There is no systemd in Breadstick, so a server does not start on its own: you start it by hand from the Terminal. Android does not give apps the network ports below 1024, so a web or file server listens on a higher port, and other devices on your network can reach it at the device's address when it listens on all addresses and Breadstick is running. More in the docs: What Breadstick cannot do: the system itself.

About Samba

From Debian's package description

Samba is an implementation of the SMB/CIFS protocol for Unix systems, providing support for cross-platform file and printer sharing with Microsoft Windows, OS X, and other Unix systems. Samba can also function as an Active Directory or NT4-style domain controller, and can integrate with Active Directory realms or NT4 domains as a member server.

This package provides the components necessary to use Samba as a stand-alone file and print server or as an NT4 domain controller. For use in an NT4 domain or Active Directory realm, you will also need the winbind package. To use samba as an Active Directory domain controller (AD DC), please install samba-ad-dc package.

This package is not required for connecting to existing SMB/CIFS servers (see smbclient) or for mounting remote filesystems (see cifs-utils).
