strace

System call tracer

Tested: works, with limits

Works, including -f and -c (add -w for real timings). strace -p attaches only to programs started from the same Terminal tab, and each run prints a harmless proot warning.

strace in Breadstick

Breadstick runs Debian's own strace package for ARM64, the build a Debian 13 computer with an ARM processor installs, and a test on a device found the limits above. It is a command line program rather than an app with a window of its own: you run it by typing its command in Breadstick's Terminal, or in any terminal window on the Linux desktop, and it needs no Desktop or Floating session running.

Commands in the package

  • strace
  • strace-log-merge

Type one in Breadstick's Terminal to run it.

Debuggers and profilers were tested on a phone: they debug, trace and profile the programs they start. Attaching to a program that is already running reaches only one started from the same Terminal tab, because Breadstick's Linux system runs every program under proot, which already traces it. About strace

From Debian's package description

strace is a system call tracer, i.e. a debugging tool which prints out a trace of all the system calls made by another process/program. The program to be traced need not be recompiled for this, so you can use it on binaries for which you don't have source.

System calls and signals are events that happen at the user/kernel interface. A close examination of this boundary is very useful for bug isolation, sanity checking and attempting to capture race conditions.
