Nmap

The Network Mapper

TestedCommand lineInternetNetwork and remote access

Tested: works, with limits

Scans run as your own user, where nmap uses connect scans. As root it tries raw sockets and stops with "failed to determine route" unless given --unprivileged; scans that need raw sockets (SYN, UDP, OS detection) cannot run.

Nmap in Breadstick

Breadstick runs Debian's own nmap package for ARM64, the build a Debian 13 computer with an ARM processor installs, and a test on a device found the limits above. It is a command line program rather than an app with a window of its own: you run it by typing its command in Breadstick's Terminal, or in any terminal window on the Linux desktop, and it needs no Desktop or Floating session running.

Commands in the package

  • nmap
  • nping

Type one in Breadstick's Terminal to run it.

Network tools use Android's own connection, and a VPN connected in Android covers them too. Anything that needs root, such as capturing traffic or changing the device's network settings, is not available. More in the docs: What Breadstick cannot do: raw network control.

About Nmap

From Debian's package description

Nmap is a utility for network exploration or security auditing. It supports ping scanning (determine which hosts are up), many port scanning techniques, version detection (determine service protocols and application versions listening behind ports), and TCP/IP fingerprinting (remote host OS or device identification). Nmap also offers flexible target and port specification, decoy/stealth scanning, sunRPC scanning, and more. Most Unix and Windows platforms are supported in both GUI and commandline modes. Several popular handheld devices are also supported, including the Sharp Zaurus and the iPAQ.
