build-essential in Breadstick
Breadstick runs Debian's own build-essential package for ARM64, the build a Debian 13 computer with an ARM processor installs, so build-essential should behave as it does on a Linux PC. The package itself has no program of its own: the commands below come from the packages it brings in, and you run them by typing them in Breadstick's Terminal, or in any terminal window on the Linux desktop, with no Desktop or Floating session needed.
Commands it gives you
gccg++make
Type one in Breadstick's Terminal to run it.
Compilers and build tools make ARM64 Linux programs on the device itself, with Debian's own toolchain. A big build uses the device's processor and memory, so it takes longer than on a desktop PC, and each parallel job is another process, which counts against the limit Android puts on apps. More in the docs: Troubleshooting: the desktop closes on its own.
About build-essential
From Debian's package description
If you do not plan to build Debian packages, you don't need this package. Starting with dpkg (>= 1.14.18) this package is required for building Debian packages.
This package contains an informational list of packages which are considered essential for building Debian packages. This package also depends on the packages on that list, to make it easy to have the build-essential packages installed.
If you have this package installed, you only need to install whatever a package specifies as its build-time dependencies to build the package. Conversely, if you are determining what your package needs to build-depend on, you can always leave out the packages this package depends on.
This package is NOT the definition of what packages are build-essential; the real definition is in the Debian Policy Manual. This package contains merely an informational list, which is all most people need. However, if this package and the manual disagree, the manual is correct.
From Debian's description of the build-essential package, under that package's license.
