GCC in Breadstick

Breadstick note

build-essential, which the Development bundle on Breadstick's Recommended apps screen sets up, brings in GCC with g++ and make, so programs build natively for the device's ARM64 processor. Each parallel build job is another process, and Android limits how many an app may run; build in your Linux home folder, which is much faster than Android's shared folders.

Breadstick runs Debian's own gcc package for ARM64, the build a Debian 13 computer with an ARM processor installs, so GCC should behave as it does on a Linux PC. It is a command line program rather than an app with a window of its own: you run it by typing its command in Breadstick's Terminal, or in any terminal window on the Linux desktop, and it needs no Desktop or Floating session running.

Commands in the package

  • gcc
  • c89-gcc
  • c99-gcc
  • gcc-ar
  • gcc-nm
  • gcc-ranlib
  • gcov
  • gcov-dump
  • gcov-tool
  • lto-dump

Type one in Breadstick's Terminal to run it.

Compilers and build tools make ARM64 Linux programs on the device itself, with Debian's own toolchain. A big build uses the device's processor and memory, so it takes longer than on a desktop PC, and each parallel job is another process, which counts against the limit Android puts on apps. More in the docs: Troubleshooting: the desktop closes on its own.

About GCC

From Debian's package description
