GitHub CLI (gh) in Breadstick

Breadstick note

gh reaches GitHub over Android's own network connection. Its sign-in can show a one-time code to enter on github.com in any browser, Android's included, so it needs no browser inside Linux.

Breadstick runs Debian's own gh package for ARM64, the build a Debian 13 computer with an ARM processor installs, so GitHub CLI (gh) should behave as it does on a Linux PC. It is a command line program rather than an app with a window of its own: you run it by typing its command in Breadstick's Terminal, or in any terminal window on the Linux desktop, and it needs no Desktop or Floating session running.

Commands in the package

  • gh

Type it in Breadstick's Terminal to start the program.

Keep repositories in your Linux home folder, which is much faster than Android's shared folders for their many small files. Version control tools reach remote servers over Android's own network connection, a VPN connected in Android included. More in the docs: The Terminal.

About GitHub CLI (gh)

From Debian's package description

GitHub CLI "gh" is GitHub on the command line. It brings pull requests, issues, and other GitHub concepts to the terminal next to where you are already working with git and your code.

GitHub CLI is available for repositories hosted on GitHub.com and GitHub Enterprise Server 2.20+, and to install on macOS, Windows, and Linux.

Comparison with hub:

For many years, hub (https://github.com/github/hub) was the unofficial GitHub CLI tool. gh is a new project that helps us explore what an official GitHub CLI tool can look like with a fundamentally different design. While both tools bring GitHub to the terminal, hub behaves as a proxy to git, and gh is a standalone tool. Check out the more detailed explanation at https://github.com/cli/cli/blob/trunk/docs/gh-vs-hub.md to learn more.
