Perl in Breadstick

Breadstick note

The perl interpreter itself is in perl-base, which every Debian system has, Breadstick's included; this package adds Perl's standard modules and tools such as cpan and perldoc.

Breadstick runs Debian's own perl package for ARM64, the build a Debian 13 computer with an ARM processor installs, so Perl should behave as it does on a Linux PC. It is a command line program rather than an app with a window of its own: you run it by typing its command in Breadstick's Terminal, or in any terminal window on the Linux desktop, and it needs no Desktop or Floating session running.

Commands it gives you

  • perl
  • cpan
  • perldoc
  • corelist
  • enc2xs
  • encguess
  • h2ph
  • h2xs
  • instmodsh
  • json_pp
  • libnetcfg
  • perlbug
  • perlivp
  • perlthanks
  • piconv
  • pl2pm
  • pod2html
  • pod2man
  • pod2text
  • pod2usage
  • podchecker
  • prove
  • ptar
  • ptardiff
  • ptargrep
  • shasum
  • splain
  • streamzip
  • xsubpp
  • zipdetails

Type one in Breadstick's Terminal to run it.

Interpreters and runtimes run on the device's own ARM64 processor, from Debian's own packages. Keep projects in your Linux home folder, which is much faster than Android's shared folders for trees of many small files. Libraries with compiled parts need an ARM64 Linux build, or the tools to build one on the device. More in the docs: The Terminal.

About Perl

From Debian's package description

Perl is a highly capable, feature-rich programming language with over 20 years of development. Perl 5 runs on over 100 platforms from portables to mainframes. Perl is suitable for both rapid prototyping and large scale development projects.

Perl 5 supports many programming styles, including procedural, functional, and object-oriented. In addition to this, it is supported by an ever-growing collection of reusable modules which accelerate development. Some of these modules include Web frameworks, database integration, networking protocols, and encryption. Perl provides interfaces to C and C++ for custom extension development.
