Rust in Breadstick

Breadstick note

Debian 13's Rust compiler is 1.85, built for ARM64. rustup, the Rust project's own toolchain manager, is a separate Debian package, listed in this catalog too. Build in your Linux home folder: Cargo writes thousands of files to a project's target folder, and Android's shared folders are much slower with that many.

Breadstick runs Debian's own rustc package for ARM64, the build a Debian 13 computer with an ARM processor installs, so Rust should behave as it does on a Linux PC. It is a command line program rather than an app with a window of its own: you run it by typing its command in Breadstick's Terminal, or in any terminal window on the Linux desktop, and it needs no Desktop or Floating session running.

Commands in the package

  • rustc
  • rustdoc

Type one in Breadstick's Terminal to run it.

Interpreters and runtimes run on the device's own ARM64 processor, from Debian's own packages. Keep projects in your Linux home folder, which is much faster than Android's shared folders for trees of many small files. Libraries with compiled parts need an ARM64 Linux build, or the tools to build one on the device. More in the docs: The Terminal.

About Rust

From Debian's package description

Rust is a curly-brace, block-structured expression language. It visually resembles the C language family, but differs significantly in syntactic and semantic details. Its design is oriented toward concerns of "programming in the large", that is, of creating and maintaining boundaries - both abstract and operational - that preserve large-system integrity, availability and concurrency.

It supports a mixture of imperative procedural, concurrent actor, object-oriented and pure functional styles. Rust also supports generic programming and meta-programming, in both static and dynamic styles.
