Ruby in Breadstick

Breadstick note

Debian 13's Ruby is 3.3, built for ARM64. Gems with native extensions compile on the device, with Debian's build tools (build-essential), and build much faster in your Linux home folder than in Android's shared folders.

Breadstick runs Debian's own ruby package for ARM64, the build a Debian 13 computer with an ARM processor installs, so Ruby should behave as it does on a Linux PC. It is a command line program rather than an app with a window of its own: you run it by typing its command in Breadstick's Terminal, or in any terminal window on the Linux desktop, and it needs no Desktop or Floating session running.

Commands in the package

  • ruby
  • erb
  • irb
  • rdbg
  • rdoc
  • ri

Type one in Breadstick's Terminal to run it.

Interpreters and runtimes run on the device's own ARM64 processor, from Debian's own packages. Keep projects in your Linux home folder, which is much faster than Android's shared folders for trees of many small files. Libraries with compiled parts need an ARM64 Linux build, or the tools to build one on the device. More in the docs: The Terminal.

About Ruby

From Debian's package description

Ruby is the interpreted scripting language for quick and easy object-oriented programming. It has many features to process text files and to do system management tasks (as in perl). It is simple, straight-forward, and extensible.

This package is a dependency package, which depends on Debian's default Ruby version (currently v3.3).
